Cubs carry seven-game winning streak into San Diego

Baseball Betting Lines

06/02/2008 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The Chicago Cubs hit the road with a seven-game winning streak in tow and will attempt to keep rolling in tonight's clash with the San Diego Padres from Petco Park.

Chicago completed a perfect week-long homestand and a four-game sweep of the Colorado Rockies with Sunday's 5-3 victory at Wrigley Field. The win improved the current National League Central leaders to a major league-best 36-21 on the season.

Aramis Ramirez went 3-for-3 with an RBI in yesterday's triumph, while Jim Edmonds doubled and tripled while knocking in a pair of runs for the Cubs, who also received a solo home run out of Alfonso Soriano.

Chicago starter Sean Gallagher (3-1) struck out a career-high eight batters over 5 2/3 innings and allowed three runs on six hits to pick up the win. Four Cub relievers combined to hold the Rockies scoreless the rest of the way, with Kerry Wood pitching a perfect ninth to earn his 14th save.

The Cubs are now an outstanding 26-8 at Wrigley Field this year, but the long- suffering franchise hasn't matched that success on the road. Chicago is 10-13 in enemy ballparks so far this season and has lost five straight series as the visitor.

Chicago has also struggled on the road against the Padres, who are 6-1 at Petco Park against the Cubs over the previous two seasons.

The Cubs will be putting their ace on display in the opener of this seven-game trek, which begins with three straight meetings with San Diego and continues with a four-game set at Los Angeles. Carlos Zambrano will toe the rubber tonight and puts a string of six consecutive winning decisions on the line, as the excitable right-hander has not lost since an April 11 setback at Philadelphia.

Zambrano delivered another excellent performance on Wednesday, although he did not factor in the decision of the Cubs' 2-1 comeback win over the Dodgers. The All-Star hurler hurled eight innings and held Los Angeles to just one run on six hits.

The native Venezuelan, whose 2.33 earned run average for the season ranks third among NL pitchers, did get credit for a victory when he faced the Padres at Wrigley on May 12. In that game Zambrano allowed three runs on six hits through seven innings.

For his career, Zambrano is 5-1 with a 2.19 ERA in overall starts against San Diego.

The Padres were slated to start Shawn Estes in tonight's opener, but the veteran had to be placed on the disabled list over the weekend after he broke his left thumb after slipping on a flight of starts on Saturday. The club will instead turn to newly-acquired Cha Seung Baek.

Baek came to the Padres this past Wednesday in a trade with the Seattle Mariners and had an impressive debut with his new club on Friday. Baek struck out the side in his lone inning of work against the San Francisco Giants and wound up receiving the win in San Diego's 7-3, 13-inning decision.

The 28-year-old was designated for assignment by the Mariners on May 21 after going 0-1 with a 5.40 ERA over 10 appearances, including one start.

San Diego had won five times in a six-game stretch before falling in extra innings to San Francisco on Sunday. The Giants rallied for three runs in the bottom of the 10th to pull out a 4-3 decision, with Jose Castillo knocking in the game-winning run with an infield single.

The Padres had taken a 3-1 lead on Adrian Gonzalez's two-run homer in the top of the 10th, but closer Trevor Hoffman (0-4) was rocked for four hits and walked one while recording just a single out in the bottom of the frame.

San Diego starter Randy Wolf was very sharp, as the left-hander yielded just one run and four hits while striking out five over six innings.

Chicago won three of four games from the Padres at Wrigley Field in May, but San Diego is 13-6 against the Cubs since the start of the 2006 campaign.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL BETTING

NCAA Football Betting

Many fans thought it was the best side in the nation by the end of last season. This year, the polls have built on Georgia's momentum and granted it the No. 1 preseason ranking, followed by Ohio State and USC. (The Associated Press has the Buckeyes at No. 2; USA Today took the Trojans.)

"To have people believing we have one of the best teams in the nation going into this thing, it's exciting for us," Bulldogs coach Mark Richt told the AP. "I don't think anything is guaranteed, but we certainly have put ourselves in position where at least the college football world thinks we're pretty good."

Georgia Bulldogs - 9.5 wins

There's no question they're good, but the Bulldogs have one of the toughest 12-game schedules in the nation, mostly because they play in the powerhouse Southeastern Conference. Away games at No. 15 Arizona State, No. 7 LSU and No. 10 Auburn loom large, with contests between the hedges versus No. 24 Alabama and No. 18 Tennessee as well as the World's Largest Cocktail Party in Jacksonville versus No.5 Florida.

Ohio State Buckeyes - 10 wins

Like the Bulldogs, the Buckeyes also have a number of tough road contests in 2008. After two scrimmages dressed up as real games versus Youngstown State and Ohio, it's off to face USC. Other tough away games include No.13 Wisconsin in October and No. 20 Illinois in November. Granted, it should be pretty easy sledding at the Horseshoe. In fact, the only ranked team that travels to Columbus is No. 22 Penn State, in October.

USC Trojans - 10.5 wins

A similarly light schedule awaits the Trojans of Southern California, which is why the oddsmakers' total is one win more and the over is currently commanding -150 odds. Pete Carroll's troops only play three ranked teams in 2008, and all of those games are at home. After what should be an easy trip to Virginia to start things off on Aug. 30, the Trojans get two weeks to prepare for Ohio State in Los Angeles. Their two other ranked opponents, No. 21 Oregon and No. 15 Arizona State, visit in consecutive weeks to start the month of October. After that, the competition eases up. Of course, this is the same highly-touted school that lost to Stanford in 2007 and Oregon State in 2006. And don't discount the fact that USC plays its biggest rivals, Notre Dame and UCLA, back-to-back to close out the regular season. On paper, the Trojans are far superior, but motivation will be high for the Irish and Bruins, especially if their historic foes are in national-title contention.

Odds to Win the Heisman Trophy

Tim Tebow, Florida - 7/2
He won it last year, so it's no surprise he's the favorite to do it again, making him just the second player to go back-to-back. Ohio State's Archie Griffin turned the trick in 1974 and 1975, and Tebow's coach, Urban Meyer, is pretty sure his star quarterback can match the Buckeyes legend.

"There has never been anyone quite like him," Meyer told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "I am very lucky to be his coach."

Chris Wells, Ohio State - 5/1

The man they call "Beanie" was a star recruit out of high school, so it's not like nobody knew who the star tailback was before he rushed for 576 yards as a freshman in 2006 and 1,609 as a sophomore. But perhaps his finest moment came last year versus Michigan when he rumbled for 222 yards and two touchdowns in the Buckeyes' 14-3 victory over the hated Wolverines.

Knowshon Moreno, Georgia - 8/1

If the Bulldogs are to live up to expectations, they'll need a huge effort from their sophomore running back. This might be the last year of college ball for Moreno, who rushed for 1,334 yards and for 14 touchdowns as a freshman, while adding 253 receiving yards on 20 receptions, so expect big things for the man from Belford, N.J.

The 2009 AP NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year odds have been released and Denver Broncos' running back Knowshon Moreno has been made the opening favorite.

Bet NFL Sports Lines

Moreno was selected in the first round of April's NFL draft and is expected to carry the rushing load for the Broncos this season. And with Jay Cutler now in Chicago, Moreno might be expected to be Denver's entire offense.

Betting Lines from sports betting lines have made Moreno a 5/2 favorite to win this year's Offensive Rookie of the Year Award. Fellow running back Chris “Beanie” Wells (Arizona Cardinals) is right behind Moreno at 7/2, while Donald Brown (Indianapolis Colts) and receiver Michael Crabtree (San Francisco 49ers) are 5/1 to win. Quarterbacks Mark Sanchez (New York Jets) and Matthew Stafford (Detroit Lions) are 7/1 and 8/1, respectively.

A couple of players who present some value are Josh Freeman, Shonn Green and Darrius Heyward-Bey.

Freeman needs to beat out Byron Leftwich to become the starting quarterback of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers but if he does, he has a lot or raw talent and could use the weapons around him (i.e. Kellen Winslow Jr. and Antonio Bryant) to be very successful in his first season.

Green enters a crowded backfield in New York, but considering both Thomas Jones and Leon Washington are unhappy about their contract situations and might holdout, the former Iowa product could become the Jets' primary back.

Everyone was shocked when Al Davis took Heyward-Bey with the eighth overall pick in April's draft, but the kid has a tremendous amount of talent and if quarterback JaMarcus Russell takes the next step this year, the former Maryland product could blossom. Plus, Heyward-Bey will be looking to prove the people wrong who said Oakland should have taken Michael Crabtree with the No. 8 pick.

And if you're looking for a deep sleeper, check out Pat White at 30/1. He enters the Miami Dolphins vaunted “Wild Cat” offense and could be a big time playmaker.
